Nicotine is a key factor in helping people quit smoking. This study found that daily smokers who started using a nicotine-containing e-cigarette were three times more likely to quit smoking within six weeks than those who used a nicotine-free e-cigarette that looked the same.

A 30-minute podcast featuring an in-depth interview with tobacco specialist Marion Adler, who shares her experience working with her many patients and provides very clear explanations about using nicotine to quit smoking, including nicotine replacement therapies and vaping. “The danger is the smoke, not the nicotine,” she repeats several times. Dr. Adler offers very reassuring and encouraging messages for smokers as the 11th edition of the “ Mois Sans Tabac ” kicks off.

Professor Bertrand Dautzenberg presents his new book. It is a strong case for a compassionate and effortless approach to quitting smoking—“without being mistreated”—by offering his patients a “nicotine feast” through substitutes or vaping. The book is very practical; in addition to smokers, it will be of interest to tobacco specialists and retailers specializing in vaping.

A British randomized trial published in NEJM Evidence shows that a simple vaping kit sent by mail is more effective at helping people quit smoking than automated support emails. Adding a few phone calls would nearly double the chances of success.

Smoke-Free Healthcare Facilities. Vichy Hospital. Five smoking areas, located at least ten meters from the buildings and out of public view, will remain accessible, the hospital states. This change applies to everyone who visits the facility: patients, healthcare professionals, accompanying persons, visitors, paramedics, transport providers, service providers, and outside contractors. Vaping is not affected by this policy.

The Irish presidency of the Council of the EU has put forward a new compromise on the overhaul of the European tobacco tax system, which would, for the first time, subject e-liquids to a minimum excise tax.

Since 2010, e-cigarettes have become the top aid for French people trying to quit smoking, far ahead of nicotine patches and gum. This is the finding of an OpinionWay survey conducted for FIVAPE in September among 3,729 adults. It also shows that vapers prefer rechargeable devices and the specialty retail market, and that misuse is concentrated outside this network.

Monitoring center, health surveillance, TikTok channel: The Ministry of Health is stepping up its fight against health misinformation. However, there is no indication that misconceptions about e-cigarettes will be addressed, especially since Stéphanie Rist herself signed a letter in early October describing claims of risk reduction as “baseless.”

The Ministry of Health is rolling out new tools to combat misinformation about health. In the fight against smoking—the leading cause of preventable deaths (68,000 per year, according to Santé publique France)—misinformation about vaping has reached unprecedented levels in public health.

Last spring, the OFDT reported that only 0.9% of middle school students were exclusive smokers in 2024—a tenfold decrease in prevalence since 2014. The generational ban amendment adopted by the Social Affairs Committee therefore aims to create a “tobacco-free generation” that already exists… Even if the battle seems to have already been won, the measure would still be symbolic, and it is all too rare to see certain anti-tobacco organizations take on tobacco for us not to commend their “courage” here…

A decree published this Sunday sets the tobacco industry’s contribution to public fire prevention campaigns at 990,943 euros, up 5.8 percent from a year ago. Relations between the industry and the government are deteriorating.

A gift to the tobacco industry to protect its cigarette sales? Eight member states, including France, are calling for a market freeze on all new nicotine products. If implemented twenty years ago, it would have prevented e-cigarettes from ever existing. If implemented today, it would deprive smokers of the alternatives of tomorrow.

The CNCT has just published its survey on point-of-sale advertising, covering 115 tobacco shops, 21 vape shops, and 1 duty-free store. The results show that 91% of these retail locations do not comply with regulations governing vaping advertising. The brands most prominently displayed are those from the tobacco industry.

The (subtle) cover of the latest issue of *Losange*, the magazine of the Confederation of Tobacco Retailers, is commendable for its clarity. Amendment I-1339, “developed in collaboration with the Confederation of Tobacco Retailers” according to its own explanatory statement, seeks to (once again) bring vaping under the purview of officials at the Ministry of Finance, thereby (once again) holding training and expertise hostage. FIVAPE has never claimed that tobacco retailers are not legitimate sellers of vaping products and has never sought to draft amendments intended to strip them of that right; the opposite is not true. A useful reminder: specialty vape shops, on the other hand, do not sell cigarettes (which kill one out of every two of their consumers).
The amendment is “being processed”

The European Commission has published a summary of the 41,693 responses to its public consultation on the revision of the tobacco directives. In it, citizens overwhelmingly reject stricter regulations, contrary to the views of NGOs and public authorities. However, these results are based on a questionnaire that has been widely criticized for failing to distinguish between cigarettes and their less harmful alternatives.

Finance Bill: Amendments on Vaping. Ahead of the debates on the Finance Bill, it comes as no surprise that several members of Congress have introduced amendments on vaping. With little support from the majority (only one has more than four signatories), none of them proposes a coherent and structured vision for a public policy on vaping. As such, FIVAPE’s proposals are extensively referenced in this article, which provides an overview of these amendments.

There is no “warning.” The study cited by the pharmacologist reveals no causal link, as the researchers themselves point out. Furthermore, experts have pointed out numerous biases (self-reporting, unclear smoking histories, and the influence of a cancer diagnosis on increased attempts to quit smoking). Given that nicotine (nicotine replacement therapy and/or vaping) is the most popular tool for quitting smoking, the publication of this article in numerous media outlets just a few days before “ Mois Sans Tabac ” is unacceptable.

Eight European countries, including France, want to curb the growth of—or even eradicate—the number one method for helping people quit smoking. In a letter addressed to Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, the signatories—including French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist—are calling for every possible ban to render vaping ineffective, or even inaccessible, to smokers. The arguments put forward completely ignore scientific studies such as the Cochrane meta-analysis or, in the case of France, the 700-page report—the result of three years of work—by ANSES, a health agency under the supervision of… the Ministry of Health.

Smoking is becoming a way to quit vaping! A study conducted in the United Kingdom and New Zealand reveals this new trend linked to misinformation about vaping, which is creating dangerous confusion. According to Michael Siegel: “Prevention efforts have placed too much emphasis on the dangers of vaping without sufficiently distinguishing them from those of tobacco. As a result, some members of the public have come to believe that vaping is just as dangerous—if not more so—than smoking.”

Parental smoking is the single most influential factor on young people, even though the “moment” when they smoke their first cigarette tends to happen with friends, out of their parents’ sight… Helping adults and parents quit smoking is therefore (also) a major challenge in the fight against youth smoking.

Last year’s historic mobilization and FIVAPE’s efforts over the past few months have paid off! The government did not give in to pressure from lobby groups that wanted to revert to an “Article 23” approach. We remain extremely vigilant as the bill moves through the legislative process, aware that amendments aimed at taxing and/or regulating vaping without consultation with the industry could be introduced. Now more than ever, support our work and strengthen our legitimacy by joining FIVAPE!
