July 31, 2026 | RESPADD
In its quarterly newsletter, RESPADD has published (in English) an article by Karl Erik Lund and Tord Finne Vedøy that uses public health data to show how the rise of snus in Norway has led to a sharp decline in cigarette smoking without an increase in total tobacco consumption, providing a concrete example of the potential of harm reduction in tobacco control policies.

As a reminder, under pressure and slander from anti-tobacco groups, Karl Erik Lund was ousted at the last minute from the presidency of the international scientific symposium on e-cigarettes organized by the National Cancer Institute (INCa) on December 5 and 6, 2022, in Paris.

The EU’s new consultation has sparked outrage among consumer groups. Following discussions with the Directorate-General for Health, they have filed a complaint with the European Ombudsman. For its part, the tobacco industry is adding fuel to the fire by adopting practices that sow confusion and aim to discredit RDR advocates. A very well-researched article—a must-read!

Response deadline: August 14, 2026.

A Sad Anniversary: Advertising for e-cigarettes has been banned for 10 years. Despite this ban, e-cigarettes remain the most popular smoking cessation aid today. Why?

Fun Fact: The first appearance of the e-cigarette on TV. This legendary clip dates back to late 2007/early 2008—almost 20 years ago! Everyone on set was stunned. Actor Clovis Cornillac is known for having quit smoking thanks to vaping. He used to smoke up to 3 or 4 packs of cigarettes a day during particularly stressful film shoots.
July 28, 2026 | THE CONVERSATION
In Europe, France is now among the ten or so countries—primarily in Northern Europe—where daily smoking among 16-year-olds is below 5 percent. It has thus met, ahead of schedule, the government’s goal of a first smoke-free generation by 2032 (fewer than 5 percent of daily smokers in adulthood).
NOTE: While the author does note that a tobacco-free generation is already a reality in France, he “omits” from the list of explanatory factors the major impact of vaping, despite it being extensively documented by the OFDT, INSERM, and other scientific studies.

Weekend reading… A look back at May 31, 2026, the WHO’s World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), which, as usual, turned into a trial against vaping. CNCT, the League Against Cancer, DNF, Contre Feu, and PPL No. 2726 on plain packaging for e-cigarettes—introduced without an impact assessment: the usual anti-vaping litany proved particularly “innovative” this time. The industry stood its ground. Op-ed by Jean MOIROUD, president of FIVAPE.

The tobacco industry’s infiltration and influence-peddling in an attempt to gain a foothold in the vaping market, which is primarily controlled by independent businesses. The journalist simply forgot to mention the support from certain anti-smoking organizations that are calling for the same regulations as Big Tobacco: taxes, flavor restrictions, and so on…

In 2022, 30% of Americans believe that vaping is more harmful than smoking. That figure was only 2.8% in 2012. This negative and erroneous perception has therefore increased tenfold. The same trend is also observed in the United Kingdom and France. According to FIVAPE’s annual survey, 3 out of 4 people are unaware of the reduced risks associated with vaping compared to smoking. ANSES has denounced this misinformation and called on public authorities to correct it. The “vape bashing” by anti-tobacco organizations—some of which are funded by the government—certainly contributes to reinforcing this negative perception of vaping and discourages many smokers from trying to quit smoking with the help of vaping. The biggest beneficiary of this massive disinformation campaign against vaping (cigarettes’ public enemy No. 1) is the tobacco industry.

In the United Kingdom, more than one in two smokers has misconceptions about vaping. As a direct result, many smokers never try e-cigarettes to quit, while others give up on them and return to traditional cigarettes. Two out of three smokers will die from a tobacco-related disease if they don’t quit. How did this country, long held up as a model for vaping, end up in this situation?

According to the latest data from the OFDT, smoking among young people has plummeted over the past 10 years: only 0.9% of middle school students (born after 2024) now smoke daily. The “smoke-free generation” is therefore already a reality. However, the national health insurance system might consider stopping funding for organizations that openly oppose vaping—the number one smoking cessation aid used by nearly 5 million French people—even though there are still 13 million smokers.

Tobacco shops mainly sell cigarettes, which kill 68,000 French people every year. But that is not—or is no longer—the focus of Contre Feu, which is once again targeting vaping—a practice that has not killed anyone to date and has, in fact, helped at least 3 million French people quit smoking entirely.
