FIVAPE Sciences category

The electronic cigarette with nicotine is one of the best solutions to quit smoking, as confirmed once again by the latest Cochrane publication.

The findings of the latest Cochrane Review 1 confirm that e-cigarettes with nicotine are an effective way to quit smoking. Published in the journal Addiction 2 , these new data from the Cochrane Tobacco Addiction Group (CTAG), focusing on methods to help people quit, place vaping with nicotine in the top three most effective solutions for eliminating tobacco from their lives. An independent, non-profit organisation, Cochrane provides reliable scientific evidence for clinicians, patients, carers, researchers and policy makers. Its role is to provide informed and well-informed health decisions around the world.

Effective support for smoking cessation

To reach these conclusions, Cochrane synthesized and analyzed the 14 reviews it conducted between 2021 and 2023. This update confirms that the electronic cigarette with nicotine is indeed one of the best aids for quitting smoking. It appears on this podium alongside varenicline and cytisine. Remember that these two well-known drugs are also unobtainable in France. Varenicline was withdrawn from the market in 2021 by its manufacturer. Cytisine is not authorized.

Vaping, a recognized solution

This new publication reaffirms the effectiveness of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation aid. E-cigarettes are a powerful support for those who want to quit smoking. And since no one is equal when it comes to addiction, a smoker should have a choice. The review’s lead author, Dr Jonathan Livingstone-Banks, said: “Quitting smoking is difficult, and some people find it harder than others, but tobacco is the only legal consumer product that is deadly, so it is important to seek help to quit. There are a range of effective forms of smoking cessation support, and cytisine, varenicline and e-cigarettes are all evidence-based ways that significantly increase the chances of quitting successfully.

To remember :

  • Electronic cigarettes with nicotine have similar results to varenicline and cytisine in smoking cessation.
  • Varenicline is no longer available in France following its withdrawal from the market by the manufacturer.
  • Cytisine is not authorized in France.
